Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Chesterbrook Owner’s Guide

Gelco chimney cap installation in Chesterbrook typically runs $340-$620 for most single-flue and multi-flue residential setups, and we stock the common Gelco sizes on our trucks for jobs booked through our Chesterbrook office. Corrine Halstead and her crew have fitted Gelco caps across the Corporate Center corridor and the wooded lots off Valley Forge Road long enough to know which models ship with undersized base flanges that pull in Pennsylvania’s freeze-thaw cycles. The camera doesn’t soften the finding. Neither do I.

Most Chesterbrook homeowners realize their cap is failing after a windstorm sends it clattering into the yard, or when water spots appear on the firebox ceiling during spring rains. A Gelco cap that sits crooked, rattles, or shows rust streaking down the crown is already past the point of reseating.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco caps break into three main series, and knowing which one you own determines whether we pull from truck stock or special-order through Haven’s buying network.

  • Gelco Model C single-flue caps - the stamped galvanized or stainless units with the bolted base ring. We see these on 1980s-2000s Chesterbrook builds, especially the split-levels near Wilson Farm Park. The base ring is 13″ x 13″ or 17″ x 17″ standard; measure the flue tile, not the crown.
  • Gelco Multi-Flue caps - the larger hoods that span two or more flues. These require exact outside-to-outside flue spacing. A half-inch error and the mesh skirt gaps, which is how squirrels get into the Valley Creek chimneys every October.
  • Gelco Wind Directional caps - the rotating models. The bearing assembly seizes after 7-10 years in PA’s mixed precipitation. We stock the cap body; the bearing is replaceable only as a factory sub-assembly.

The OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Gelco is straightforward: Gelco’s stainless mesh is 18-gauge, 5/8″ weave, which matches the factory spec. Some aftermarket equivalents drop to 20-gauge or 3/4″ weave to hit a price point. We source through Haven’s buying network specifically to keep customer prices honest without that downgrade. If your cap still has the Gelco label on the hood interior, we match it. If the label’s gone, we measure flue dimensions, crown slope, and mesh gauge on-site before quoting.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
  • The cap tilts or sits unevenly. The base flange has pulled its masonry anchors, or the crown beneath it has spalled (flaked) from freeze-thaw. Water gets under the flange and accelerates both problems. In Chesterbrook’s clay-heavy soils, foundation settling transfers stress to the crown over a decade or so.
  • Rust stains down the chimney face. Gelco galvanized caps begin red-oxidizing at the mesh-to-hood weld points after 8-12 Pennsylvania winters. Stainless models last longer but will show tea staining at the base if the crown wash has failed.
  • Mesh is torn, gaps, or missing sections. Squirrels and raccoons force entry where mesh fatigues. We find this most often on north-facing caps where ice loads the mesh all winter.
  • Water in the firebox or rust on the damper. The cap’s storm collar or hood overhang has failed to shed water outward. Sometimes it’s a cap design mismatch - a low-profile Gelco on a chimney with insufficient height above the ridge line.
  • Wind noise or visible movement during storms. The cap has detached from its base ring or the base ring has loosened from the flue tile. This is the failure mode that ends with the cap in a neighbor’s yard on the Main Line.

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: whether the cap still seats flat on the flue tile, whether the mesh is intact, and whether the storm collar gap is sealed. Use binoculars from the ground - don’t climb.

Here’s where DIY goes wrong. Gelco caps on multi-flue setups require precise base fabrication; a cap that overhangs the crown by even an inch catches wind lift and tears off. Single-flue caps need proper base-ring tension - too tight and you crack the flue tile, too loose and the cap departs in the first March gale. The crown beneath the cap often needs repair before the new cap seats correctly, and that work is not owner-grade.
