Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex crowns sit at the top of the chimney termination, sealing the gap between the liner and the masonry while letting exhaust vent properly. The part you need depends on which DuraFlex series you have installed.

DuraFlex 304 and DuraFlex 316Ti are the two residential stainless steel series we see in Chesterbrook homes. The 316Ti is the heavier alloy, more common in homes burning cordwood regularly through Chester County winters. Both use a top plate and crown assembly that mounts over the liner with a draw band, but the crown diameter must match the liner OD exactly: 3″, 4″, 5″, 6″, 7″, or 8″. We also stock quality aftermarket equivalents through our Haven buying network, sourced from Olympia Chimney and Famco, that match the 304 and 316Ti specs at lower cost. The aftermarket crowns we use are 304 stainless minimum, same gauge as OEM. For a liner still under DuraVent’s 15-year warranty, OEM preserves that coverage. For liners past warranty, aftermarket is the honest call.

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

• Water stains on the firebox floor or smoke chamber walls. The crown’s job is to shed water away from the liner-masonry joint. When the seal cracks or the crown rusts through, water follows the liner down. In Chesterbrook’s freeze-thaw cycles, that water expands and widens the leak path every winter.
• Rust particles or metal flakes in the firebox. DuraFlex crowns are stainless, but the draw band and top plate hardware are often galvanized or mild steel. Once moisture breaches the crown, that hardware corrodes first. If you’re vacuuming orange dust before every burn, the crown is compromised.
• Draft that pulls weakly or reverses on windy days. A cracked crown lets wind pressurize the flue directly, disrupting the pressure differential that drives exhaust upward. DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check from the ground: binoculars will show if the crown is missing, tilted, or visibly cracked. A flashlight up the flue from below might reveal rust flakes or water marks. That’s the limit of what we’d advise a homeowner to do.

The actual replacement involves working at roof height on a steep surface, often with a ladder set on Chesterbrook’s typical colonial rooflines. The draw band is under spring tension. The seal between crown and masonry requires high-temp silicone rated to 500°F, applied clean. More critically, a misaligned crown directs exhaust against the masonry, accelerating deterioration, or worse, creates a gap where CO can escape into the chase.
